How It Feels to Be Colored Me

I loooove the writings of Zora Neale Hurston. Her style is so chill. It seems as if she's talking to me.
In this particular piece, I laughed alot. It was almost as if throughout the whole story she was confused on why all of sudden she became this person she didn't know existed within her. A line that made me laugh was "I am the only Negro in the United States whose grandfather on the mother's side was not an Indian chief."
Nowadays, people always say that Blacks always say they're mixed with Indian but for Zora to say this, it was almost as if she were cracking an inside joke. Something else that caught my attention was "the very day I became colored." Very important in this passage. Zora didn't realize nor notice any of the differences bewteen herself and whites (besides skin  color) until she moved. It was then that she became this so called colored. When she was put into society for real and saw how majority saw her. She wasn't just this little girl who played on the porch anymore. No, now she was colored. Interesting.

King still a King?

Mr. King has moved on but has left his legacy along with a 3 day weekend with us. Often times he's not recognized for what he's done but the first person you learn about during Black History month in elementary school is Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Why? Because although he wasn't the only civil rights leader, he did put in alot ALOT of work to cease segregartion. And it happened didn't it? I guess people don't actually take the time to think about how different this world would've been if Dr. King hadn't done what he did. We might not all be sitting in the same classroom right now for all we know. I thank Dr. King and his companions for the determination to end segregation and I'm very happy that there is a holiday to celebrate this man.
Relevance to today, well although racism still exists ( I don't think it'll ever die) circumstances are made equal for people of all race and color. That relates to us because we're not all the same.
There's other issues going on now like Gay Rights and I feel as though there will be a Dr. King for this movement too.
Dr. King did not only just help Black people so please get that out of your mind if you were thinking it.
He helped everyone by setting a great example of what it meant to be a leader and equality for all.
We all have something to offer, no one person nor race knows it all.
Thankyou Dr. King.

There Was A Child Went Forth

I like this..poem? Story? Whatever it is, I like it.
Its very creative in explaining its point which from what I got was that a child's childhood experiences make that child who they will be for the rest of their life.
Not only did the author use experiences, Whitman also used just things that the child was surrounded by and saw/observed, things that stuck in the child's mind.
Whitman also described the personalities of the child's  parents and related it back to the child.
I feel that although we as humans don't obviously observe the people around everyday, we could describe them right off the back just because of the fact that they're apart of our life.
Even little small things like "The early lilacs" became apart of the child's life.
Im willing to bet everyone can recall something that small from their childhood.
For me it would be the smell of the tree outside of my pre-school.
It smelled horrible but I smelled it every morning and eventually my brother and I began to crack jokes on it.
Its stained in my memory. I think about it everytime I pass my pre-school. It still grows in the same spot.
Something that small became a big part of my childhood and it kind of shows the bit of creativity that I have now for taking something negative and making it postive.
But of course we don't think about how these things until, well I didn't think of this until I read this excerpt thingy.
Its very deep and had me thinking.

Diary - Wale

The song I'm going to be reviewing is Diary by Wale.
Actually, Wale came to the basketball game today at Chicago State.
Yes, Wale is a rapper but his style is so unique. He interprets music and poetry together and it all makes sense. His music is not just "ooo baby, yes I like you, let's go party."
His lyrics literally have a meaning to it and the thing is, the meaning is obvious for those who aren't used to.
There's always puns and metaphors but I mean, first you have to get pass the obvious stuff to understand what exactly he's talking about.
In the song Diary, Wale refers to a girl he wants to talk to and who he has fallen for but the girl won't let her guards down because she's been through so much. She's trying to figure out what she should do and most of her thoughts go into her Diary.
Wale refers to it as 'Diary of a black girl," but I believe it can apply to any girl.
We all have the same emotions, more or less.
There is one part in the whole song where Wale stops his singing/rapping and begins to actually recite poetry.
Here are a few lines from that section:
Cars, nothing I drive can drive you out of this frame of mind,
For such an ugly picture and,
Money, nothing I buy can buy more time for your ears to tell your heart to listen to it,
Diamonds, a girl's best friend is what they say but believe me with the right allegiance shorty you gonna shine anyways,
and everyday that goes by is a couple more lines in her diary.

Okay, first off, this was just a pretty statement all together. He used material things to describe his love for this girl and to describe the girl.
Next, if you actually hear the song while he says this, he keeps up with the beat and pace so that it sounds as if the word he always leaves off on brings up a whole new subject and so on.
Wale is beast because he raps from the heart.
I love him!

Jay&Nick

Gatsby's first name is Jay? So casual for a dude so formal as he. Nick, casual but he's Nick so...
Gastby loves Daisy which is Nick's cousin and who is married to Tom.
Okay. Jay and Nick's relationship is quite vague. What I mean by that is theres not much to do with the relationship. They can't brag about how they've been BFFs and how they've known each other since diapers.
All they could do from Chapters 1-5 is go over each other's house and chat. That's about it.
I don't really know if Gatsby, excuse me, I meant Jay. I don't really know if Jay is using Nick to get closer to Daisy or if he really wants to be friends with Nick. Jay didn't bring much up with Nick about Daisy so it wasn't that obvious if he was trying to get closer to her. In chapter 5, we do see an interaction with Daisy and Jay where Nick comes back in the room they are occupying after an hour and sees Daisy drying tears while Jay is smiling. What goes on here isn't said but it's very frustrating because it's like an cliff-hanging lead.
I haven't completely finished chapter 5. I have about 4 more pages but as far as I get, Jay seems to be quite queer now. Like, overly excited and the real him is coming out.
So, was he using Nick or what? Nick doesn't seem to care anyway.

Mommy, How Could You!

My mom cheated.
Now Christmas is ruined,
Her lover fleeted.
To hide what they were doing.

I was almost asleep on Christmas Eve
When I heard a giggle, I jumped out of bed
I heard a really loud sneeze
Followed by a "Ow, I hit my head."

I then heard a "I'm sorry hun, my beard is soft and bushy."
My mom answered " Oh shut up you old mad, you're going to wake up Johnny."
Who was this old old man that my mother referred to
Surely it wasn't my dad, he was only 52.

I was about to put on my slippers when I remembered I had on footies.
So I raced out of bed to see who this stranger could be.
I creeped down the hall, one creek at a time.
Trying not to be heard, like a secret agent investigating a crime.

"Did you hear that" the mystery man said.
"Here what dear? Johnnys all put to bed."
" Are you sure because I hear little steps."
"I'm positive, now calm down and relax."

And then there was silence once more in the living room.
I took a deep breath and let out a silent "phew."

I got to the end of the hallway and looked around the corner
No one was in sight, Ugh! Err!

Just as I was about to head back to bed, I heard the old man say
"The visit was nice but I gotta be heading back to my slay,"

"Slay?" I said. Almost too loud.
No humans here drive slays around.
Only Santa, Santa? Santa! Santa is here!
He's the old man with the nice bushy beard.

I was so excited that I rand down the hall
I was so excited I tripped, and made a great fall.

As I got myself together, I looked up and paused
My mother was kissing old Santa Claus.
I can't wait to tell my dad.
He's goina' be so mad!

Mommy ruined Christmas for the whole world.
She let Santa take her as Daddy's girl.
Mommy ruined Christmas for the whole family.
But most of all mommy ruined Christmas for me.

Presents, food, stockings, don't matter.
I don't even wana' eat the cake batter!

Santa is on his own naughty list now!
No more gifts will be given out!
And its all because
Mommy was kissing Santa Claus.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!! :)

Who I am Thankful for In American Lit?

I am thankful for Morgan, Joanne, and Natalia. I love you guys! You guys are some of the best friends a person can have and keep me laughing in and outside of class. I love doing group work with you guys because we always seem to get way, way, .....way off subject. Did you notice everytime we do that, we end up on the subject of youtube or something about something that was on youtube? Anyway! Morgan, I am thankful to have yet another english class with you. Aside from lunch, I don't see you so this class really keeps us in contact which is great because you're a good friend and I don't want to lose you! Also, thankyou for letting me stretch on your desk. And I love the comments that we make that no one else hears, except Joanne and Natalia.
Joanne, I just met you this year but I feel like we've known each other longer. The fact that your life is surrounded with music makes us click instantly. When we read your intro blog, I was like "Oh! My new bestfriend!" :)I love having 6th&7th period with you. Especially when sometimes we do nothing....
Natalia! I love you! Having spanish and math with you last year really brought us close and I'm so glad that we have classes this year together. We always seem to keep each other laughing even when nothings funny. Is that queer? Ummm. :) You crack me up even if you don't know it. You and Joanne, together, is very good for my health because laughing is healthy but if you laugh for 3 days straight, you'll die so I'm glad this isn't boarding school. Wow....I just got way off subject. Youtube. :) I love you guys (and my seat in class) and I am thankful for you guys.
